Aviators during WW-ll were issued silk requests for assistance know as "Blood Chits" that offered a reward for those who assisted downed fliers. A typical message states:
I am an American Aviator. I do not speak your language. I am an enemy of the Japanese. Please take me to someone who will provide for my safety and that I am returned to my people. My government will reward you. The unique serial number on this chit identifies VMF-224 pilot Lt. William O. Boshart and the assistance message is shown in 7 different languages.
