Selected Items from Squadron Diary - August 1943

05 August  Forward echelon arrived Pearl Harbor via USS Kittyhawk.  Assigned station at Marine Corps Air Station, Ewa, Territory of Hawaii.  

     Forward Echelon Composition: 
       7 Officers (inc. Navy MC), 100 Enlisted 
       (inc. 1 corpsman), and 18 F4U-1 Aircraft.

     Rear Echelon Composition:
       48 Officers (inc.1 Navy MC), 250 Enlisted 
       (inc. 8 corpsmen) and 18 F4U-1 Aircraft.

06 August Squadron joined Marine Air Group 24.  Unloaded cargo.  Received 16 F4U-1's from VNF-223.  34 officers, 143 enlisted men and 7 corpsmen departed MCAS, El Toro for San Francisco to board transport.  Transferred 18 F4U-1's to Naval Air Station, Pearl Harbor.

07 August  Forward echelon at MCAS, Ewa, received 17 F4U-1's from VMF-211 and 2 SNJ-4's from from VMF-211.  9 pilots left San Francisco via Clipper to join forward echelon.

08 August  9 pilots arrived MCAS, Ewa, via Clipper.  18 pilots left San Diego via Naval Air Transport join forward echelon.  7 ground officers, 143 enlisted men and 7 corpsmen sailed from San Francisco via SS President Tyler, to join forward echelon.

09 August  18 pilots arrived MCAS, Ewa, via Naval Air Transport. 

11 August  Elements at MCAS, Ewa, started familiarization flying.  9 pilots departed San Diego via Naval Air Transport, to join forward echelon.

12 August  9 pilots arrived MCAS, Ewa, via Naval Air Transport.

14 August  F4U-1, bureau #02670, crashed on runway during night landing.  Pilot uninjured.  Plane delivered to U.S. Naval Air Station, Ford Island.  Three pilots transferred to VMF-212.

15 August  Received 2 F4U-1's from Naval Supply, Ford Island.  Rear echelon consisting of 7 Marine Officers, 142 enlisted men and 7 corpsmen, arrived Pearl Harbor via SS President Tyler.

16 August  Two pilots received back from VMF-212.  2nd Lt. 
Herbert W. STRASS, Jr., crashed in F4U-1, bureau #02215, 
in night take-off.  Pilot seriously injured and plane demolished.

17 August  Lt. STRASS died of injuries received previous day.  
Transferred 5 pilots to VMF-212 and received 5 pilots in 
exchange.

18 August  Marine Aircraft Group 24 detached from Fourth Marine Base Defense Aircraft Wing effective this date.

28 August  Forward echelon consisting of 6 officers and 95 enlisted men embarked USS Tangier for transfer to South Pacific Area.

30 August  Secured flying this date to prepare aircraft for transfer.
